Department of Space to launch 30 satellites in next decade

The Department of Space plans to launch “not less than 30 satellites” in the next decade.
These include a series of resourcesat, cartosat, ocean and atmospheric satellites, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) Director V. Jayaraman told reporters on the sidelines of a conference on Karnataka Geo-Spatial Database on Tuesday.
The Hyderabad-based NRSC, which comes under the Department of Space, acquires, processes and disseminates remote sensing data for applications and disaster management.
“We will launch Resourcesat-2 in early February or January-end. It will be a replacement satellite for Resourcesat-1, which gives us 5.8 metres, 70 km multi-spectral data for the first time,” Dr. Jayaraman said.
An “integrated multi-mission ground segment” would be set up in Hyderabad, which would enable the Indian Space Research Organisation to receive satellite data and to supply 1000 space products every day directly to the users.
“Emergency products”
At present, the NRSC needed four to five days to deliver space products. With the new ground segment, the centre would be able to do that within 12 hours and even supply “emergency products” within an hour of receiving the data. The ground segment would be set up at a cost of around Rs. 40 crore and was expected to be operational by June 2011.
Delivering the keynote address at the conference, Dr. Jayaraman said experts in GIS and remote sensing must tap into the power of cloud computing. GIS, he added, must be made simple, friendly and easy-to-use.
The conference was organised by the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Applications Centre.

Now, a new chip ‘to make desktop computers 20 times faster’

In what could be called a major technological innovation, scientists have unveiled an ultra-fast chip which they claim could make desktop computers 20 times faster than the current ones.
Modern computers have a processor with two, four or sometimes 16 cores to carry out tasks. Now, a team, led by the University of Glasgow, has developed a central processing unit, which effectively has 1,000 cores on a single microchip.
The developments could usher in a new age of high-speed computing in the next few years for home users frustrated with slow—running systems; the new “super” computer is also much greener than modern machines, despite its high speed, say its developers.
The scientists used a chip called a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) which like all microchips contains millions of transistors —— tiny on—off switches that are the foundation of any electronic circuit, the Daily Mailreported.
But FPGAs can be configured into specific circuits by the user, rather than their function being set at a factory.
This enabled the team to divide up the transistors within the chip into small groups and ask each to perform a task.
By creating more than 1,000 mini-circuits within the FPGA chip, the scientists effectively turned the chip into a 1,000-core processor —— each core working on its own instructions.
The chip was able to process around five gigabytes of data per second in testing — making it approximately 20 times faster than modern computers.
Team leader Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhedea said: “FPGAs are not used within standard computers because they are fairly difficult to program but their processing power is huge while their energy consumption is very small because they are so much quicker —— so they are also a greener option.”
While most computers sold today now contain more than one processing core, which allows them to carry out different processes simultaneously, traditional multi-core processors must share access to a memory source, slowing the system down.
The scientists were able to make the processor faster by giving each core a certain amount of dedicated memory.
Dr. Vanderbauwhede said: “This is very early proof-of-concept work where we’re trying to demonstrate a convenient way to program FPGAs so that their potential to provide very fast processing power could be used much more widely in future computing and electronics.”

Notion Ink Adam

Pre-orders have already begun and the top-end model sold out within a day, evoking a lot of buzz worldwide!
Google Chrome OS/Netbooks
Google's Chromium Operating System will be commercially available soon, probably installed on their own netbooks they might be marketing. Simple browser-based OS is what Google's planned and it will fully be cloud based, with each program opening in a tab within. It automatically updates itself to the latest software available everytime you turn it on and they boot in less than 10 seconds. Your desktop is your Google Chrome homepage, makes more sense now?
Nintendo 3DS
While Pokemons and Gameboys are still among kids' favourites here, Nintendo has come out with a 3D version of the popular dual-screen Nintendo DS. And, you don't need your 3D glasses anymore to play/watch 3D. That's the technology from the Japanese guys this time and it can shoot photos in full 3D and video chat on 3D too! Gotta catch 'em all in 3D this time, ain't we?
Amazon Kindle Colour
Amazon's Kindle is so far the best reading device available and it's simple UI keeps its readers focussed on what they're reading at the moment. Daily newspapers or books, they'll do better in colour. Amazon is working on a more feature packed version of the Kindle and it is rumoured to support 4G as well. Quite an addition to the world's favourite reading device.

Serious flaw in Internet Browser

Microsoft has warned about a flaw on the Internet Explorer browser that could allow hackers to take control of unprotected computers.
The bug allows hackers to inject malware onto any system if they manage to trick users into visiting booby-trapped websites. Anyone with Internet Explorer (IE) 6 to 8 is potentially affected.
The code to exploit the bug has already been published. The computer giant said there was no evidence it was being used yet by criminals but they were “investigating” and working on a permanent fix, reports the Daily Mail.
The bug targets how the browser manages a computer's memory when it is processing Cascade Style Sheets — which are design instructions that determine how most web pages look.
Hackers can inject their own code into the stream of instructions and in this way hijack the PC.
Although Microsoft has improved how memory management is protected, it does not work when some older parts of Windows are called on.
The bug first came to light on the seclists.org full disclosure mailing list earlier this month.

BlackBerry denies India e-mail access deal


BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) has hit back at reports, which said that it was ready to allow the Indian authorities have access to customers' highly-secure corporate e-mails.
The Canadian company slammed as “false and technologically infeasible” a report in an Indian newspaper, which said that RIM would allow the Indian government have access to all messages and e-mails sent by its 400,000 BlackBerry customers in the country. An internal Home Ministry memo, apparently seen by the paper, suggested that RIM would automatically make readable all BlackBerry communications, including encrypted enterprise e-mails.
RIM said only an account holder had the necessary key to decrypt the messages. But it confirmed that security authorities and mobile operators would be granted “lawful access” to the popular BlackBerry Messenger chats.
The company is battling to resolve a three-year dispute in the region, with countries including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and India demanding access to BlackBerry communications, citing threats to national security. RIM has until January to placate India's fears or risk being pushed out of the country.
The region's mobile security fears were heightened by reports that the Mumbai terrorists used secure BlackBerrys to plot their attacks.
India is an important market for RIM. Informa Telecoms & Media forecast that more than 600,000 BlackBerrys will have been sold there this year, and that India's smartphone market will grow rapidly from 12 million to 49 million by the end of 2015. Copyright: Guardian News & Media 2010

Top ten science breakthroughs of the year

A mechanical device that operates in the quantum realm tops the Sciencejournal's list of advances in 2010.
Until this year, all human-made objects have moved according to the laws of classical mechanics. Back in March, however, a group of researchers designed a gadget that moves in ways that can only be described by quantum mechanics — the set of rules that governs the behaviour of tiny things like molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles. In recognition of the conceptual ground their experiment breaks, the ingenuity behind it and its many potential applications,Science has called this discovery the most significant scientific advance of 2010.
Physicists Andrew Cleland and John Martinis from the University of California at Santa Barbara and their colleagues designed the machine—a tiny metal paddle of semiconductor, visible to the naked eye — and coaxed it into dancing with a quantum groove.
First, they cooled the paddle until it reached its “ground state,” or the lowest energy state permitted by the laws of quantum mechanics (a goal long-sought by physicists).
Then they raised the widget's energy by a single quantum to produce a purely quantum-mechanical state of motion. They even managed to put the gadget in both states at once, so that it literally vibrated a little and a lot at the same time — a bizarre phenomenon allowed by the weird rules of quantum mechanics.
Science has recognized this first quantum machine as the 2010 Breakthrough of the Year.
They have also compiled nine other important scientific accomplishments from this past year into a top ten list, appearing in a special news feature in the journal's 17 December 2010 issue. “This year's Breakthrough of the Year represents the first time that scientists have demonstrated quantum effects in the motion of a human-made object,” said Adrian Cho, a news writer forScience. “On a conceptual level that's cool because it extends quantum mechanics into a whole new realm. On a practical level, it opens up a variety of possibilities ranging from new experiments that meld quantum control over light, electrical currents and motion to, perhaps someday, tests of the bounds of quantum mechanics and our sense of reality.”
The quantum machine proves that the principles of quantum mechanics can apply to the motion of macroscopic objects, as well as atomic and subatomic particles. It provides the key first step toward gaining complete control over an object's vibrations at the quantum level. Such control over the motion of an engineered device should allow scientists to manipulate those minuscule movements, much as they now control electrical currents and particles of light. In turn, that capability may lead to new devices to control the quantum states of light, ultra-sensitive force detectors and, ultimately, investigations into the bounds of quantum mechanics and our sense of reality. (This last grand goal might be achieved by trying to put a macroscopic object in a state in which it's literally in two slightly different places at the same time — an experiment that might reveal precisely why something as big as a human can't be in two places at the same time.)
“Mind you, physicists still haven't achieved a two-places-at-once state with a tiny object like this one,” said Cho. “But now that they have reached the simplest state of quantum motion, it seems a whole lot more obtainable—more like a matter of ‘when' than ‘if.'”
The other nine
Science's list of the nine other groundbreaking achievements from 2010 follows.
Synthetic Biology: In a defining moment for biology and biotechnology, researchers built a synthetic genome and used it to transform the identity of a bacterium. The genome replaced the bacterium's DNA so that it produced a new set of proteins—an achievement that prompted a Congressional hearing on synthetic biology. In the future, researchers envision synthetic genomes that are custom-built to generate biofuels, pharmaceuticals or other useful chemicals.
Neandertal Genome: Researchers sequenced the Neandertal genome from the bones of three female Neandertals who lived in Croatia sometime between 38,000 and 44,000 years ago. New methods of sequencing degraded fragments of DNA allowed scientists to make the first direct comparisons between the modern human genome and that of our Neandertal ancestors.
HIV Prophylaxis: Two HIV prevention trials of different, novel strategies reported unequivocal success: A vaginal gel that contains the anti-HIV drug tenofovir reduced HIV infections in women by 39 percent and an oral pre-exposure prophylaxis led to 43.8 fewer HIV infections in a group of men and transgender women who have sex with men.
Exome Sequencing/Rare Disease Genes: By sequencing just the exons of a genome, or the tiny portion that actually codes for proteins, researchers who study rare inherited diseases caused by a single, flawed gene were able to identify specific mutations underlying at least a dozen diseases.
Molecular Dynamics Simulations: Simulating the gyrations that proteins make as they fold has been a combinatorial nightmare. Now, researchers have harnessed the power of one of the world's most powerful computers to track the motions of atoms in a small, folding protein for a length of time 100 times longer than any previous efforts.
Quantum Simulator: To describe what they see in the lab, physicists cook up theories based on equations. Those equations can be fiendishly hard to solve. This year, though, researchers found a short-cut by making quantum simulators—artificial crystals in which spots of laser light play the role of ions and atoms trapped in the light stand in for electrons. The devices provide quick answers to theoretical problems in condensed matter physics and they might eventually help solve mysteries such as superconductivity.
Next-Generation Genomics: Faster and cheaper sequencing technologies are enabling very large-scale studies of both ancient and modern DNA. The 1,000 Genomes Project, for example, has already identified much of the genome variation that makes us uniquely human—and other projects in the works are set to reveal much more of the genome's function.
RNA Reprogramming: Reprogramming cells—turning back their developmental clocks to make them behave like unspecialized "stem cells" in an embryo—has become a standard lab technique for studying diseases and development.
This year, researchers found a way to do it using synthetic RNA. Compared with previous methods, the new technique is twice as fast, 100 times as efficient and potentially safer for therapeutic use.
The Return of the Rat: Mice rule the world of laboratory animals, but for many purposes researchers would rather use rats. Rats are easier to work with and anatomically more similar to human beings; their big drawback is that methods used to make "knockout mice"— animals tailored for research by having specific genes precisely disabled—don't work for rats. A flurry of research this year, however, promises to bring "knockout rats" to labs in a big way.
